Bonus Bucks Challenge
Time: Leg 4
Location: Shanghai, China
Name: 词 (Words) – Mandarin
The goal of the game is to accrue the most points from identifying words on the letter “comb,” a hexagonal arrangement of letters.
The team that wins the game will earn all of the money contributed to the group kitty. The kitty will start at $300 (since 7 teams are remaining), and each participating team will add $100 to it.
At the beginning of the game, teams will be shown a “comb” of letters. They will have just ten minutes to identify as many words as they can on that comb. Teams can identify words by starting on any given letter, and then moving to the next letter in the word which must be touching the current letter on some side. This means words will be identified in a fashion similar to the game Boggle (rather than a word search) where words need NOT necessarily be in a straight line.
Words must be AT LEAST four letters long. Words will be acceptable if and only if they are not capitalized in any place (which would make them proper nouns) and they have a valid definition onwww.dictionary.com www.hasbro.com/scrabble/en_US/search.cfm (in addition to or in place of serving as an acronym to represent a larger phrase).
Teams will need to depict words that they have found by marking the word (including the path from first letter to last letter) in some kind of image processing software. Teams must also submit their comb by the end of the allotted time frame; submissions that are time stamped after the time frame has elapsed will be disregarded. Teams can submit by uploading and sharing a link, email, or AIM Direct Connection.
Teams can use each letter on the letter figure at most once. If a team has two players, they may submit separate modified letter figures; however, if both players use the same letter hexagon in different words, only the first one to submit their figure will have the word containing that letter hexagon counted.
Teams will be given a score for each word that they find on the letter figure. If multiple teams find the same word (even if it is in a different board position), all teams that find the word will be given one point for each letter in the word. If, however, a word that a team identifies is unique, and no other team finds it, the word will be scored based on its Scrabble point-equivalents, as seen below.
1 point: R, S, T, L, N, E, A, I, O, U
2 points: D, G
3 points: B, C, M, P
4 points: F, H, V, W, Y
5 points: K
8 points: J, X
10 points: Q, Z
Again, the team to accrue the most points on their letter comb in the allotted time frame wins the challenge—and all of the money in the kitty.
